D-Panthenol Liquid (also known as Pro-Vitamin B5 or Pantothenol) is a highly concentrated, syrupy format of Provitamin B5, the stable, biologically active dextrorotatory (D) isomer of pantothenic acid. Formulation & Handling Guidelines
Formulating with pure D-Panthenol requires specific heating and stability considerations due to its unique high-viscosity, hygroscopic physical structure:
Handling the Viscosity: At room temperature, pure D-Panthenol is thick and sticky like cold honey. Keep the container tightly sealed and submerge it in a warm water bath at 40°C–50°C (104°F–122°F) for 5 to 10 minutes prior to compounding. This safely reduces viscosity for seamless, clean pouring and precise weighing.
Phase Incorporation: Add directly to the aqueous (water) phase of your formula. It dissolves rapidly in cold or warm water.
Temperature Constraints: While highly stable, prolonged exposure to high heat can degrade the vitamin. For hot-process emulsions (like creams and lotions), it is recommended to add it during the cool-down phase below 40°C (104°F).
pH Stability Window: D-Panthenol exhibits optimal chemical stability in finished formulations with a final pH ranging between 4.0 and 6.5. It can undergo hydrolytic cleavage if exposed to strong acids or bases outside this window.
Recommended Usage Level:
Hair Care (Shampoos, Conditioners): 0.5% – 1.5% for moisture retention and shine.
Skin Care (Creams, Lotions, Serums): 1.0% – 5.0% for barrier repair and deep hydration.
Nail Care (Cuticle oils, strengtheners): 1.0% – 2.0%.
Storage Instructions:
Store in a cool, dry place between 15°C and 25°C (59°F–77°F), away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Because pure D-Panthenol is highly hygroscopic (absorbs moisture from the air), always keep the container tightly sealed immediately after use to maintain its purity and maximize its shelf life.
