Emulsifiers & Solubilizers

Cosmetic emulsifiers and solubilizers are both members of the surfactant family, meaning they contain both water-loving (hydrophilic) and oil-loving (lipophilic) parts. While both help mix oil and water, they are used for different purposes and are not interchangeable.

Emulsifiers

Emulsifiers are used to create emulsions, which are opaque, milky, or creamy mixtures where oil and water are combined in significant quantities (typically 15% to 50% oil phase).

• Function: They reduce surface tension to allow large amounts of oil and water to stay mixed without separating over time.

• Appearance: The resulting products (like lotions and creams) are typically opaque or turbid because the oil droplets are large enough to scatter light.

• Key Types:

  • Oil-in-Water (O/W): Small oil droplets in water. Used for lightweight, non-greasy products like day creams.

  • Water-in-Oil (W/O): Small water droplets in oil. Used for rich, nourishing, or water-resistant products like night creams.

• Common Examples: Glyceryl Stearate, Cetearyl Alcohol, Lecithin, and Olivem 1000.

Solubilizers

Solubilizers are specialized surfactants used to dissolve small amounts of oil (usually 0.1% to 2%) into a water-based product.

• Function: They are primarily used to incorporate small, potent lipophilic molecules—such as essential oils, fragrance oils, or vitamins—into water-based formulas.

• Appearance: They create transparent or clear solutions (like toners, micellar waters, or body mists) because they form extremely tiny "micelles" that do not scatter light.

• Properties: They generally have a higher HLB (Hydrophilic-Lipophilic Balance) value than standard emulsifiers, making them highly water-soluble.

• Common Examples: Polysorbate 20, Polysorbate 80, and PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil.
