CA$20.00
Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate (often called THD Ascorbate or THDA) is a highly stable, oil-soluble ester of Vitamin C. Unlike traditional L-ascorbic acid, which is water-soluble and notoriously unstable, THD Ascorbate is highly resistant to oxidation from air, light, and heat.
Because it is oil-soluble, it penetrates the skin's moisture barrier much deeper than traditional L-ascorbic acid. It then converts into pure vitamin C inside the deeper layers of the epidermis to trigger collagen synthesis, reduce dark spots, deliver powerful anti-aging, skin-brightening, antioxidant benefits and offer powerful cellular protection without causing irritation. It is the gold standard Vitamin C choice for luxury face oils, premium waterless serums, anti-aging creams, and sun care products.
Key Benefits & Functions:
Deep Lipid Penetration: Excellent lipid solubility allows it to penetrate the epidermis far more efficiently than water-soluble Vitamin C forms.
Exceptional Stability: Highly stable configuration prevents premature oxidation and discoloration, giving your formulas a long shelf life.
Advanced Brightening: Helps fade the appearance of dark spots, evens out skin tone, and targets hyperpigmentation.
Collagen Support: Promotes skin elasticity and firmness, visibly reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Technical Specifications:
INCI Name: Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate
Chemical Name: Tetrakis(2-hexyldecyl) ascorbate
CAS Number: 183476-82-6
EC / EINECS Number: 430-110-8
Purity / Assay: 98% pure active material.
Appearance: Clear, pale yellow to colorless, free-flowing oily liquid.
Odour: Odorless to very Faint, characteristic mild scent.
Stability: Exceptional resistance to oxidation, heat, and discoloration. Unlike L-ascorbic acid, it will not turn your formulations brown or rapidly degrade when exposed to air.
Solubility & Compatibility:
Solubility: Completely soluble in cosmetic oils, lipids, esters, and silicone bases. Insoluble in water.
Compatibility: Synergizes perfectly with oil-soluble antioxidants like Vitamin E (Tocopheryl Acetate) and Ferulic Acid to maximize free-radical protection. It pairs smoothly with Niacinamide and Retinol for high-performance brightening regimes.
Common Usages & Applications:
Luxury Face Oils & Serums: Acts as the primary active ingredient in premium anhydrous, glowing facial elixirs.
Brightening Creams: Targeted treatments for hyperpigmentation, age spots, and uneven skin tone.
Anti-Aging Lotions: Daily moisturizers and eye creams designed to reduce fine lines and support skin elasticity.
Sun Care & After-Sun: Reverses and defends cells from UV-induced free radical damage.
Recommended Usage Percentages:
Typically formulated between 0.5% to 10.0%.
0.1% to1%: General antioxidant protection and minor brightening support
0.5% – 2%: Daily Moisturizers, Lotions, & Eye Creams
2% – 5%: Daily hyperpigmentation repair and anti-aging benefits
5% – 10%: Professional, high-potency clinical treatment serums
Formulation & Blending Guide:
Oil-Phase Compatibility: Completely soluble in cosmetic esters, silicones, and natural carrier oils.
Incorporation Phase: Add directly to the oil phase of your batch. Although more heat-stable than standard Vitamin C and can safely withstand temperatures up to 80°C for brief blending windows, it is highly recommended to add THD Ascorbate during the cool-down phase (below 40°C / 104°F) of emulsions to maximize its stability.
Optimal Formulation pH: Remains stable across a wide, skin-friendly pH range of 4.0 – 6.5. It eliminates the need for harsh, highly acidic environments.
Tip: Pair with Vitamin E (Tocopheryl Acetate) in your oil blend to create a synergistic antioxidant network. Do not expose to direct, prolonged high heat.
Storage: Store in a cool, dry, dark environment away from direct heat sources. While it is far less prone to oxidizing than traditional Vitamin C, keeping it sealed in air-tight, amber glass containers will maximize its 12-month shelf life.
Suitability & Sustainability:
Cruelty-Free: 100% cruelty-free and never tested on animals.
Vegan-Friendly: Synthesized entirely via plant-derived and structural processes free from animal inputs.
GMO-Free: Manufactured without any genetically modified materials.
COMPARISON: THDA vs ATIP
Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate (THD) vs. Ascorbyl Tetraisopalmitate (ATIP)
Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate (THDA) and Ascorbyl Tetraisopalmitate (ATIP) are near-identical isomers that are frequently used interchangeably in the cosmetics industry, though they possess minor structural variations in their branched fatty acid chains.
They are both oil-soluble, ultra-stable Vitamin C derivatives.
They share the exact same chemical formula (C₇₀H₁₂₈O₁₀) and identical molecular weights (1129.76g/mol).
They both function as lipid-permeable powerhouses that convert to free Vitamin C inside the skin.
Feature | Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate (THD) | Ascorbyl Tetraisopalmitate (ATIP) |
Fatty Acid Chains | Four 2-hexyldecanoic acid chains (isomers of palmitic acid) | Four isopalmitate / isohexadecanoic acid chains |
Commercial Status | Widely used in North American luxury/clinical formulations | Heavily popularized in Japanese and global Asian cosmetic lines |
Skin Tolerance | Exceptionally gentle; favored for ultra-sensitive skin types | High skin affinity; exceptionally smooth skin-feel |
Efficacy & Texture | Lightweight, high-penetration oil-soluble liquid | Slightly richer lipid texture, exceptional long-term stability profile |
